Learning at Grantlea Downs

The students experience learning in all areas of the curriculum including;
•    Literacy (Writing, Reading, Listening, Speaking)
•    Numeracy (Number & Algebra, Statistics, Measurement, Geometry)
•    Integrated Studies (Science, Social Science, Technology, Te Teo Maori, I.C.T)
•    Healthy Living (Health and Physical Education)
•    The Arts (Music, Visual Art, Dance and Drama)

Student learning is integrated where appropriate to allow for them to make connections in their learning across multiple contexts.



BIG IDEAS

These Big Ideas are the understandings and experiences that we know matter most for students at Grantlea Downs School to learn. These Big Ideas cover all the learning areas and strands within the New Zealand Curriculum;

It’s a Beautiful World – Students learn to communicate their imagination, senses and feelings in order to create and respond to the works of others.

Tell Me About It – Students learn to understand, use and enjoy language and literature to communicate orally, visually, or in writing.

Work it out – Students explore patterns and relationships in number, space and data and learn to express these relationships in ways that help them to make sense of the world around them.

Te Ao Maori – Students will learn about the uniqueness of Maori Culture by learning through the Maori world view, arts, physical education, language, local history and landmarks, cultural experiences and perspectives.

Being Me – Students learn about their own well-being and that of others and society by being involved and making healthy choices in health and sport related contexts.

Under Investigation - Students will learn, through testing their ideas, to investigate, understand and explain their understanding of the world around us.

One World, Many People – Students will learn about the many different cultural practices that make up our world and how they compare to their own.

Many hands make light work
– Students will develop understanding of group structures, and their functions in society.

No 8 Wire – Students will become practical problem solvers when designing, modifying and testing products and systems to become resourceful citizens.

Unique NZ – Students will learn about how we use land and its resources, and its impact on people and the environment and will learn to connect New Zealand’s past, present and future and develop an understanding of how what happens now is a result of what happened before.

One World, Many People – Students will learn about the many different cultural practices that make up our world and how they compare to their own.
