Learning at Grantlea Downs School

At Grantlea Downs, we focus on the "whole child." This means that while we have a very strong focus on Literacy and Mathematics, we also make sure our students enjoy a balanced and exciting curriculum. Your child will have plenty of opportunities to explore the Arts, Science, Technology, Social Sciences, and Health and Physical Education.

Building Strong Foundations

We follow the government requirements of one hour of reading, one hour of writing, and one hour of maths every day. These core skills give our students the foundation they need to succeed in everything else they do.

Curious and Independent Learners

We want our students to be more than just listeners—we want them to be researchers and problem-solvers. We encourage our learners to be curious, to ask big questions, and to use their creativity to find solutions. Our goal is to help every child develop the skills to become an independent learner with a deep well of knowledge.

We also explicitly teach the "Key Competencies"—the essential life skills children need to thrive.
These include thinking for themselves, managing their own behaviour, relating well to others, and participating and contributing. Whether it is through a planned lesson or a "teachable moment" in the playground, we are always looking for ways to help students grow.

Our Goal for Your Child

Ultimately, we want every student at Grantlea Downs to leave us as a confident, well-rounded, creative, and kind person who is ready for the world.

When required, each syndicate will publish a newsletter for parents outlining the programmes of work during the year and explaining what the focus for learning will be.
The staff prepare and update school curriculum plans for each area and these plans are used as a basis for planning classroom lessons to suit the needs of students.
